OCTOBER 2005 QUALIFICATION ROUND RESULTS These are the final results of the USACO OCTOBER 2005 qualifying round. The next contest is the USACO 2005 NOVEMBER 2005 contest to be held 11-14 November. Our goal in these contests is to cultivate interest in computer programming among pre-college students and recognize those who are outstanding performers. An additional 140 contestants (13%) were disqualified for not following the rules; all have been banned for life. China led the list with 56 disqualifications; Romania had 23. No other country had anywhere near 10. It is interesting that only 19% of the entries were from the USA. The grading system accepted 1.40 GB of text (mostly programs but the occasional binary), a total of 7,374 submissions. Mechanically, the contest ran relatively perfectly. The new compilers seem to be working well, which is good since we have a completely new JAVA system. Solutions are not currently available but will be listed on that page if they become available. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Qualifying for the Gold or Silver division at the USACO is a very big deal. It implies an ability to write complex algorithmic code under a fairly severe deadline. Those who qualify for these elite divisions should congratulate themselves! Note that IT IS ALWAYS POSSIBLE TO MOVE UP TO THE NEXT DIVISION if you do well on a contest. If you are sure you did well, send me email and ask for 'early grading' so you can move up to the next division for the same contest. This avoids asking 14-year-olds to compete with seasoned professionals. Both the GOLD and SILVER problems were at the high end of challenging (again).
